Finding a way
to Get Rid of Bad Credit Card Debt
Bad credit card debt can have
you finding out that you are drowning in debt. There
are many people in today's economy that are finding
themselves coming up short when the bills begin to roll in.
Whether it is due to loss of a job, health issues, or poor
spending habits, bad credit card debt can be dealt with and
you can move on with your life.
Keeping in
touch with the creditors is an important step to solving your problems.
Letting them know that you have every intention of paying,
but need some time to get things together or that you would
like to pay a smaller amount every month until you get back
on your feet is a positive action toward getting help. Many
times, a creditor may lower your interest rate and lower
your payments for a specific time period to help you get
your money together.
If a creditor will not work
with you on your bad credit card debt, another
option may be credit counseling. There are many companies
that offer credit counseling and may be able to set up
payments with your creditors on your behalf. They may get
the late and over the limit charges dropped and set a
payment plan that works with your budget. Be wary of some of
the advertised credit counselors. Check into one thoroughly
before signing on. There are many that work in favor of the
creditors or charge fees for their services. There are
credit counselors that are non-profit agencies and would be
a better choice.
If credit counseling doesn’t
work and trying to get the creditors to help by lowering
payments, then you could consider
settling your account by paying less than you owe and be
forgiven for the remainder of the balance. This can be a good
thing and a bad thing for help
with credit card debt. Good, because you can
get it paid off sooner. Bad, because you may have to come up
with a large amount of money in a small amount of time to
meet their demands. Also, you have to claim the amount you
don’t pay back as income to the IRS at tax time.
There are
many options for bad credit card debt. You just need to
look over all of your options and decide what is better for
you. Whichever path you decided to follow, you will find that
something will work and you will be able to get out of
debt.
